A designer or luxury shingle is a heavier, multi-layer asphalt shingle shaped to imitate natural slate or hand-split cedar. CertainTeed Grand Manor and Presidential Shake and GAF Camelot II are the common examples — they weigh roughly twice what a standard architectural shingle does, which is where the depth and shadow come from.

They cost more than architectural shingle and less than real slate or cedar, while carrying the longest warranties in the asphalt category and needing none of the maintenance natural materials do. On a home whose architecture is the selling point, they are usually the better value; on a simple roof line, architectural shingle gets you most of the performance for less.

Generally 30–40 years, and the premium lines carry lifetime limited warranties when installed as a full system by a certified contractor. Their weight also makes them noticeably more resistant to wind uplift than lighter shingles.

Almost never. Designer asphalt is heavier than standard shingle but far lighter than the slate or cedar it imitates, so a conventionally framed roof carries it without modification. That is a large part of the appeal — the look of slate without the structural engineering.
